About me
Sam’s call as an artist started at an early age with a painting of a dinosaur at age 7. His fascination with art came from the beauty of God's creation and seeing sunsets with his family, hunting and riding horses in the North Dakota badlands, lazy days at his family’s lake cabin, or simply enjoying nature and the changing seasons.
Sam continued to pursue painting and especially loved painting wildlife. He eventually entered an art school named The Atelier and his horizons were expanded from primarily wildlife to landscapes, still life, portraiture, and the figure. This school, dedicated to teaching the techniques of the masters, gave Sam the ability to paint a 3 dimensional subject onto a 2 dimensional canvas. It also challenged Sam in his use of color, brush strokes, light, and composition.
While attended The Atelier, Sam also attended Magdalen College where he received a Bachelors of Divinity and was ordained as a minister.
After his studies at art school and seminary in Minneapolis, MN, Sam moved back to Bismarck and became a youth director. He found that doing youth ministry while continuing to pursue excellence in art made a perfect combination and he became well known in the community for painting scenes of North Dakota and caring for young people. After 9 years, Sam transitioned to an Associate Pastor and served for another 9 years. Currently, Sam serves as the lead pastor at Riverstone Church in Bismarck ND and continues to follow the Lords calling in his painting and ministry.
Sam and his lovely wife Sarah are celebrating 17 years together and have been blessed with 4 amazing children, Gabe, Cassia, Micah, and Caleb. These relationships and others have inspired Sam with the goodness and beauty of life and continually encourage him in creating masterpieces that reflect the beauty of creation.
